Iron Ore Spike Will Squeeze The Steelmakers

cargo ship 3The nascent iron ore swaps market implies that iron ore prices could stay elevated for the foreseeable future, as per recent data from ICAP. Most recently China-related prices have surged to new highs.

This is good news for major ore producers such as Vale, Rio Tinto, and BHP, and not so good news for Chinese steelmakers.

The Steel Index daily iron ore price reference price reached US$104.1 per dry metric tonne on Friday. The price, published daily for 62% Fe content fines delivered China, and has surged upward, increasing by 5.0% on yesterday and 9.2% over the week. This is the highest level since the index was first published on 17th November 2008.

Yet despite this rather bullish outlook for the iron ore market, the media-darling Baltic Dry Index, an index for ships which carry bulk commodities such as iron ore, lost almost a fifth of its value in just the last week. And freight-forward agreements (FFA's) point to a 19% decline in bulk rates by year-end.

“The Chinese have backed off and it’s starting to show in the number of shipments this month,” Gavin Durrell, a Cape Town-based official at Island View Shipping SA, Africa’s biggest commodities shipping line, said by phone today. “Iron ore and coal seem to be slowing down.” ... Derivatives betting on the Baltic Exchange’s future assessments fell for a third day, indicating the declining spot market is causing traders’ future expectations to deteriorate.

While at first blush a negative shipping market seems at odds with a positive ore market, there is a reason why iron ore prices could remain strong even while the rates to ship iron ore and other dry bulk commodities continue to fall. This is because the larger concern for the dry bulk market currently is in regards to oversupply of new ships coming online due to new deliveries rather than a drop in long-term iron ore demand growth.

So while A) lower dry bulk rates implied by FFA's should be at least noted and B) iron ore swaps should be taken with a grain of salt given that they are relatively new, falling dry bulk rates still shouldn't be of overwhelming concern to those who are bullish on the base metal.

In fact, cheaper ore shipping, caused by over-supply of ships rather than lack of ore demand, could nicely make the all-in cost of ore lower, all else being equal. And in fact, while dry bulk shippers may be headed for stormy seas, the long-term argument for upward commodity price pressure remains very much intact.

...barring economic disaster in large emerging markets, an army of consumers competing for raw materials will continue to emerge. Residual hopes of simply reverting to previous consumption patterns in the U.S. are misguided. Another bout of price spikes will focus minds eventually.

Iron ore market has definitely bottomed out

Mumbai: Metals and mining company Sterlite Industries India Ltd, which is competing with Grupo Mexico SAB de CV to acquire Asarco Llc, says it has put in its final bid and won’t raise it further. Sterlite raised its bid to $1.5 billion (Rs7,260 crore), while Grupo Mexico’s revised bid stood at $2 billion. Anil Agarwal, chairman of Vedanta Resources Plc., which owns Sterlite, said in an interview that it was well placed to win the bid. Edited excerpts:

Future plans: Vedanta Resources chairman Anil Agarwal says he wants to see Sesa Goa become the third largest iron ore firm in the world. Abhijit Bhatlekar / Mint

Future plans: Vedanta Resources chairman Anil Agarwal says he wants to see Sesa Goa become the third largest iron ore firm in the world. Abhijit Bhatlekar / Mint

Why did you raise the Asarco bid? People are focused only on the cash bid being raised but with the cash and the bonds put together, have you not raised the bid amount significantly?

We have raised almost about 10-15% altogether... but that is our final offer and we believe that it is the best offer we can put on the table.

Given that you have always considered this a fairly strategic asset, would you be content to walk away even if there is a marginal upbeat by Grupo Mexico which pips you to the post at the last moment?

As far as we are concerned, we have looked at this asset and we believe that we can turnaround this asset. It has a good potential for us to look into. But at this point of time, I think we are very well placed. If that does not happen, it is fine with me.

Do you think your bid should be the winning bid?

I believe that because the stakeholders are favouring us and that is how the indication is coming and we believe that is what is going to happen.

What signals are you getting from China because for last few days, there has been a little bit of turbulence in the commodity market on talk of tightening by China, overheating in the Chinese market? Are those concerns justified?

I have been saying that the commodity price is going to be flat.

All the commodity prices are still about 40-50% lower from peak, so maybe it has moved up for about 10-15% on some demand, some growth story in China and some parts of India, but I don’t foresee any reason for prices to move up significantly as far as the commodities of copper, aluminium or zinc are concerned.

Do you expect any major correction because many of these commodities have gone up between 80% and 100% year-to-date? Do you see the possibility of a 15-20% kind of correction in either of these two, copper or aluminium?

It has gone up 35-40%. Mines are a scarce commodity and it is very difficult to have an opening of a new mine or a new production to come up. I don’t foresee any major correction to take place.

If you do manage to buy Asarco at this current bid, given where copper prices are right now, do you think the deal will immediately be EPS (earnings per share) accretive?

I think so, because it is already making a profit and there is a potential and we can improve a lot in the operation and I am positive about it.

Give us one word on iron ore and what signals you are getting from that market. Given recent negotiations and where deals have been struck, would you say that the iron ore market has bottomed out?

I think so. Iron ore market has definitely bottomed out. We have seen very good signals, prices are moving up and the cost of production has gone up very high of some of the mines. So in iron ore, the prices have moved up and I believe that they are going to sustain on these levels.

By when will Sesa Goa Ltd start showing year-on-year growth in revenues and profits?

I have a vision that it should be the third largest iron ore company in the world, which should start producing 50 million tonnes and going forward to 100 million tonnes. I am looking forward to it and it is going to happen.

India has a tremendous resource. I have seen Australian droughts year after year and they have alternative resource which is a natural resource and they have grown with that and sustained. I think India is going to do the same thing. We have a tremendous natural resource and if we do it properly, I think we will be able to overcome this calamity.

Baltic index stays close to 3-month low

Cargo demand soft; immediate-term outlook looks weak, observers say

Email this article
Print article
Feedback

(LONDON) The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, which tracks rates to ship dry commodities, stayed close to a three-month low on Tuesday with weak appetite for cargoes keeping activity light.

The index, which gauges the cost of shipping resources including iron ore, cement, grain, coal and fertiliser, fell 2.45 per cent or 66 points to 2,623 points on Tuesday and was at its lowest since May 18.

The main sea freight index has fallen nearly 39 per cent since hitting a more than eight-month high on June 3 of 4,291.

'Fewer cargoes are appearing and we are seeing a build up of tonnage,' said Derek Langston, a director with SSY Consultancy and Research.

'The outlook in the immediate term looks a bit weaker,' he said.

In recent months, Chinese demand for iron ore - the primary material in the manufacture of steel - has driven freight market activity while also adding to swings on the main index.

China's iron ore imports raced to another record as steel production rebounded to a new high in July, with stimulus-induced demand allowing mills to maintain near-capacity output as they pass on rising ore costs.

Brokers said slower Chinese iron ore and coal demand in August have weighed on rates.

'We are in the summer period and we are just not seeing the amount of cargoes that are enough to keep rates where they are,' said Mr Langston.

Port congestion in China as well as off Australia's coast had tied up a large number of Capesize vessels, which typically haul 150,000 tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal.

SSY said there were 47 Capesize vessels waiting to berth off China, down from 88 ships in mid June.

'On the Capesize market, you have a bit of a wait-and-see a situation going on where both charterers (shippers) and owners have just taken a step back from the market and are looking to see the direction the market is going to take,' Mr Langston said.

The Baltic's Capesize index dropped 1.36 per cent on Tuesday and was at its lowest since May 21.

Average Capesize earnings have fallen by over 53 per cent to US$44,315 per day since their June peak this year, with shippers able to push rates lower due to vessels becoming free.

'While the near-term impact on dry bulk shipping spot charter rates has been negative, we believe the strengthening demand for steel . . . is very much a positive development and view the current weakness as a necessary transitory period in the recovery of the broader dry bulk shipping market,' investment bank Jefferies & Company said in a report.

Concerns continue to grow over the rising number of new ships set to hit the market in the coming months.

'There has been a bit of an acceleration in new building deliveries which would obviously be a bearish factor going forward,' said SSY's Mr Langston. -- Reuters

InfoMoney

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The best July in 20 years has set Wall Street up for a tumultuous August, as investors look past the earnings surprises that fueled the run to the economic questions that remain.

Next week brings quarterly results from another 18% of the S&P 500 companies, including Dow components Cisco Systems, Kraft Foods and Procter & Gamble. Economic reports include readings on personal income and spending, retail sales and the labor market.

Investors will also be easing into the start of a typically low-volume month on Wall Street -- one that follows on the heels of a notably strong July.

"The story of July is the large number of companies that beat forecasts and all the portfolio managers that decided to put money to work," said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co.

He said that the momentum will slow in August, which could be something of a roller-coaster month. "We'll probably end up just higher than July."

The Dow gained 8.4% in July, its best performance since 1989, while the S&P 500 gained 7.4%, its best July showing since 1988. The Nasdaq's advance of 7.8% was its best July performance since 1997.

Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq saw bigger monthly gains in April of this year, but for the Dow, July was its best month overall since October of 2002.
0:00 /2:50Economy: Here comes the sun

All about earnings: With over two-thirds of the S&P 500 having already reported results, profits are currently on track to have fallen 29% versus a year ago, according to earnings tracker Thomson Reuters.

Clearly, profits are still suffering amid the recession, but the results were expected to be worse. As of July 1, analysts were expecting year-over-year results to fall more than 35%.

Although led by financials, results have been beating expectations pretty much across the board, said John Butters, senior research analyst at Thomson Reuters. He said the utilities sector was the lone holdout.

"The theme is still that we are seeing an unusually high number of companies beat expectations," said Butters.

Around 74% of companies have beat forecasts, versus the long-term average of 61% and the all-time record of 73%, reached in the first quarter of 2004. Companies are also beating forecasts by the greatest amount since Thomson began tracking results 15 years ago, beating by an average of 13% versus the previous record of 7.1%. That record was also made in the first quarter of 2004.

But that cheer hasn't spilled over to third-quarter forecasts, with few companies or analysts lifting estimates. Currently, third-quarter profits are expected to dip 21.5% versus a year ago, according to Thomson. On July 1, analysts thought 3Q results would dip 20.9% year-over-year.
Quarterly results

Here'a what's on tap for the week ahead:

Monday: Humana (HUM, Fortune 500) and Marathon Oil (MRO, Fortune 500) are among the companies reporting results in the morning, but neither are typically market movers.

Tuesday: Dow component Kraft Foods (KFT, Fortune 500) is due to report results after the close of trading. Kraft is expected to have earned 54 cents per share versus 58 cents a year ago.

Wednesday: Dow component Procter & Gamble (PG, Fortune 500) reports results in the morning. The consumer products firm is expected to have earned 79 cents per share versus 80 cents a year ago.

Dow component Cisco Systems (CSCO, Fortune 500) is expected to report results after the close of trading. The tech leader is expected to have earned 28 cents versus 40 cents a year ago.

Other companies due to report results Tuesday evening include Allstate (ALL, Fortune 500), Prudential (PRU, Fortune 500) and Sunoco (SUN, Fortune 500).

Thursday: Comcast (CMCSA, Fortune 500) and DIRECTV (DTV, Fortune 500) report results in the morning, but neither are usually market movers.

Friday: No notable financial reports are due.
Economy

Monday: The Institute for Supply Management releases its July manufacturing index shortly after the start of trading. The index is expected to have improved to 46.5 from 44.8 last month, according to a consensus of economists surveyed by Briefing.com.

The Senate will vote on a bill that would add $2 billion to the popular Cash For Clunkers program, which has been running low on funds. The House of Representatives approved the bill Friday. The program gives consumers who buy fuel-efficient cars refund vouchers worth as much as $4,500 on traded-in gas guzzlers.

Reports on July auto and truck sales are due in the afternoon. Sales are expected to show the impact of the Cash for Clunkers program.

The June construction sales report from the Commerce Department is also due in the morning.

Tuesday: The Commerce Department releases its June readings on personal income and spending before the start of trade. Income is expected to have fallen 1% after rising 1.4% in the previous month. Spending is expected to have risen 0.3% after rising 0.2% in the previous month.

The June Pending home sales index from the National Association of Realtors is due in the morning. The index is expected to have risen 0.3% after rising 0.1% in May.

Wednesday: The July reading on private-sector employment from payroll services firm ADP is due in the morning. Employers are expected to have cut 340,000 jobs from their payrolls after cutting 473,000 in the previous month.

The ISM services sector report from the Institute for Supply Management is due in the morning. The index is expected to have dipped to 48 in July from 48.8 in June.

The June factory orders report from the Commerce Department is also due in the morning, as is the weekly oil inventories report from the Energy Information Administration.

Thursday: The weekly jobless claims report is due in the morning from the Labor Department.

Additionally, July sales figures from the nation's retailers are due throughout the morning.

Friday: The July jobs report from the Department of Labor is due to be released shortly before the start of trading. Employers are expected to have cut 333,000 jobs from their payrolls after cutting 467,000 jobs in the previous month.

The unemployment rate, generated by a separate survey, is expected to have risen to 9.6% from 9.5%.

In the afternoon, a report on consumer credit is due, although its not usually a market mover. To top of page

O frigorífico Minerva - BEEF3 devolveu parte do desproporcional desconto no
a empresa continua tendo.

segmento no país.

1 ano.

Abraços,

Small Caps. "

Fim do embargo

Outras altas

ETERNIT Enviada: Qui Jun 05, 2008 1:21 pm
"COMUNICADO

Sobre a decisão do Plenário do Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF) do dia 04 de

A lei federal 9.055/95 e o decreto 2350/97 prevêem e adotam medidas rigorosas

A Companhia acredita no uso controlado e responsável do amianto crisotila,
Decreto 2350/97 e normas regulamentadoras do Ministério do Trabalho) , e

grato
